Our History

Galveston Restaurant Group has brought the “art of good eating” to patrons since 1997. Created by Johnny Smecca, Joey Smecca and Danny Hart, they opened their first restaurant, Saltwater Grill, in 1998, located in the heart of the Galveston Arts & Entertainment District. Since then, they have been creating, prospering and selling restaurant concepts that deliver the best dining experiences on the Texas Gulf Coast.

Nonno Tony's World Kitchen

Galveston Restaurant Group's newest dining concept – Nonno Tony’s World Kitchen is now open at Pier 21. Nonno Tony’s World Kitchen offers Italian, Creole and traditional American fare all served from an open style kitchen which features a steam kettle bar and brick ovens. An extensive beer and wine list will be offered in “Paulie’s Bar.”

“Nonno,” Italian for “Grandfather,” is attributed to Galveston Restaurant Group’s patriarch, Tony Smecca (Johnny and Joey’s father). “Paulie’s Bar,” another family namesake, is named in honor of Danny Hart’s father, the third partner of Galveston Restaurant Group. Nonno Tony's features techniques and dishes honed at other Galveston Restaurant Group properties.

Papa’s Pizza

Papa’s Pizza has been voted “Galveston’s Best Delivered Pizza” and prides itself on living up to that reputation. It’s the pinch of love that we put into every dish that makes us the Island’s best gourmet pizza, Italian food, soups, sandwiches and more. Always fresh and always delicious.

The  Gumbo Diner

Galveston Restaurant Group is excited to announce the opening of its newest and highly anticipated addition, The Gumbo Diner. Located at 36th and Seawall next to the iconic Commodore hotel, The Gumbo Diner is where classic American dining and New Orleans flare meets the beach.

Offering the first true American Diner option for the area in years, owners Danny Hart, Johnny Smecca and Joey Smecca recognized a demand on the island. “With Southern breakfast staples, chicken & waffles, tasty burgers and the best gulf fried shrimp on the Texas coast, this soon-to-be Galveston legend has something for everyone.” Joey Smecca said. The Gumbo Diner will also parallel the trend of steam kettle cooking that has become a staple in other GRG restaurants.

Mario’s Seawall Italian Restaurant
